In my tests, updated clients cannot work with outdated servers, but outdated clients can work with updated servers. I was wondering how much a guarantee there is for the latter case. Do the versions I tested (Server 3.1.3, Client 3.1.2) just happen to be compatible because the different is small, or will all old clients work with new servers? Perhaps only if they share a major revision number?

You can connect to a newer version server by using an older version client, but you cannot connect to an older version server by using a newer version client. The same principle applies between servers.
