Using variable items in time (for instance, amount of coins)

Hi all,
I would like to create some items that should be gathered in diferent moments and locations. Imagine we have 3 boxes. In each we have 2 coins, 5 coins and 14 coins. As I see it, I have to create 3 different items "Coins", "Coins 1", "Coins 2", and them in a template create a field "Number of coins". As you can see, this is not really useful. There is a way to create just on item called "Coins" and use it in different ways?
