The Navigator

Navigator overview

Each pane has an optional Navigator 1 which can be dragged out from the left pane border. It can be resized using the splitter 2. Navigator tabs let you switch between different modes. The project structure tab 3 shown above presents a hierarchical list of objects 4.

You can even collapse the Navigator entirely by dragging the splitter to the left pane border. A "drag-out bar" 5 appears and allows you to expand the Navigator again.

Clicking the drag-out bar lets the Navigator reappear with the last stored splitter position.

Each row in the Navigator represents an object in the project's structure and shows some information about it:

  • 6 Object's claiming state MULTI-USER: Has the object been claimed for editing by you or another user? See here for details on claiming partitions.
  • 7 Expander: Collapse or expand containers like you're used to in any other hierarchical list, e.g. the Windows Explorer.
  • 8 Object type icon: Shows at a glance the object's type, e.g. Category (example above), "Flow Fragment" , "Entity", "Location", etc.

When using templates for your objects you can exchange this icon by your own image. See here how to do this.
  • 9 Object name: The object's display name.
Please note: If the object is a dialogue fragment, the navigator shows a summary of the dialogue line:

Hovering over claiming state icons brings up a tool-tip:

Claiming state icons MULTI-USER

- The object is a partition and available (read-only for you, but can be claimed).
- The object is a partition and claimed by someone else (read-only for you).
- The object is a partition and claimed by you (can be edited).

- Your local copy of the object is outdated, you don't have the latest changes somebody else has made. Update required!.

- The object is a child of a partition that is available (read-only for you, but can be claimed).
- The object is a child of a partition that is claimed by someone else (read-only for you).

View options

Click this button to get a drop-down list of options that influence the visible data in the navigator. See below for a detailled description of the options.

Show my partitions only MULTI-USER

In multi-user environments, you can only edit objects in a partition you have claimed before. These parts of the project are called "your partitions". Using this option "show my partitions only", you can make the navigator only showing objects that are claimed by you and thus editable.

Collapse all

This button collapses the entire project tree and tidies up your navigator.

Expand all

To get a quick overview on the complete project tree, click this button to expand all containers and then use the vertical scroll bar.

Open change history MULTI-USER

This opens a dialog box that shows all changes that have been published since the creation of the project.

Update project MULTI-USER

Causes articy:draft to update all partitions of the project. This can be a quicker way of getting changes to multiple partitions than updating individual partitions.

Publish changes in multiple partitions MULTI-USER

If you have not only changed one but several partitions, this is a convenient way of publishing all your work to the Perforce/Subversion server.

Repartition project (Admin only) MULTI-USER

As an admin you can repartition the project with a click on this icon. Find more information here.

Discard all changes MULTI-USER

Sometimes you may want to undo all your changes you have made on serveral claimed partitions and revert these partitions to the time when you have claimed them. This button actually retrieves the data for all your claimed partitions from the repository/depot and overwrites your local changes.

Please note, that the discarding only affects the changes you have not yet published to the repository! Changes you have already published can only be reverted by using the tools of your Perforce/Subversion.

Navigator tabs

You can switch between five different aspects to be shown in the navigator:
  • Project structure
  • Temporary objects
  • Search
  • Conflicts
  • Library
See navigator tabs below for more details.

View options

Show object colors

Check 20 to see an object's color in a little field besides the object name 21.

Most articy:draft objects can be assigned a color to quickly distinguish and categorize them, for example via the "color picker" button 22 in the image below:

Show claiming states of parent partitions MULTI-USER

If 23 is checked, the claiming state icons appear in a hierarchical manner 24 instead of just a flat list. You can now see if an object lies within a claimed partition, which again lies in an available partition, and so on.

Additional information: Technical name / Template name

If want to see additional information at a glance, you can use the "Additional information" entry in the visibility settings 25 to toggle between the following modes:
  • None: Only the object's display name is shown. (default setting)
  • Technical name: The object's technical name (i.e. for use in scripts) is shown besides the display name 26.
  • Template name: If a template has been applied to the object, the name of the template is shown besides the display name.

Navigator tabs: Project structure / Search / Conflicts

An articy:draft project can easily grow to several thousands of objects. To provide a good overview on this sheer mass of elements, the navigator provides different views. You can switch between those views via tabs in the upper right corner of the navigator.

  • 27 - Overall project view containing all objects
  • 28 - Temporary objects
  • 29 - Search view allowing to search for and display only those objects that fullfill a certain search criteria; please see Search tab for details
  • 30 - Conflict view that collects and displays potential problems that the user inserted data may cause; please see Conflicts tab for details
  • 31 - Library providing a quick access on assets, entities and locations
